As I go around and speak with people in the community, I am constantly asked about how I plan to bring jobs to Whatcom County. The first thing I say to them is that I would stop the attacks on industries in our county that creates jobs.
In Whatcom County, we are faced with an unemployment rate of 5.4% which is higher than our State rate of 4.4%. That is over 8,000 people in our county who don't have a job.
We can reduce our unemployment rate by supporting the current industries we have now in our county. Instead of regulating industries away from here, let us work with them to bring a balance of providing jobs and protecting our environment. We all live here together and we all have a vested interest to make it work.
Next, we need to work on making Whatcom County high tech friendly. Providing an infrastructure of broadband will attract businesses that need this technology available to establish a base business here. We live across the border from Vancouver, BC which is a high tech city. Attracting these types of companies can bring hundreds, even thousands of jobs to Whatcom.
We can also work on attracting manufacturers. These type of companies would find Whatcom favorable since we are close to a city which can provide mass shipping (Vancouver) but not have the high cost of operations being in BC.
If I am privileged to represent you on the council, I will work hard with my colleagues to bring good jobs to our county.
